If Japan is anything to go by, the Wii U hasn't proven to be the smash hit Nintendo hoped it would be. If Nintendo won't be able to deliver a good package of games for the system soon it might be their 2nd Nintendo 64 or even worse. Rumors are that both Microsoft and Sony release their next consoles in 2013 and 2014.

I had always thought the N64 was what enabled the Playstation to get a firm foothold in the industry. The fact that the N64 had less space for game data (it still used the outdated cartridge format) was what caused big third-party names (at that time) like Square and Capcom to jump ship. Square never returned to Nintendo unless it was for a handheld game, and Sony ended up getting Final Fantasy 7, the game that put the system on the map.

I remember thinking this even at the time of the N64's release, when it was known as project reality. Thinking to myself "Why are they still using cartridges?!". In retrospect these days, I think Nintendo slipping up like that may have helped the industry actually. It enabled a strong competitor (Sony) to enter and force better performance out of Nintendo. In turn, to stay on top, Sony had to be top notch too.

The gamers won as a result due to the race for better quality games in the mid-late 90's, while Sega quietly left the ring after the Saturn and Dreamcast failed. How Xbox managed to enter the industry was a mystery to me though, since almost anything available on it was available on the PS2 (with the exception of first-party titles like Halo). Even today that fact hasn't changed, though I suspect Xbox Live (and years later the Kinect) may have had something to do with it.

i think that xbox broke through by the FPSs and LAN games. ;)
in the 360 the kinect made huge difference, but it was based on the wii idea anyway. hehe

I think the fact it's called wii u makes people think it might be just the wii with a different controller, as opposed to a more powerful console. They should have had a different name me thinks.

as odd as this may sound I believe its slow is because they are still supporting the wii same with the DS aka they are still making services available on the wii and wii U at the same time, meaning there's no real reason to get one for people here and there. The only pull is the games and there really aren't that many.

lemme give ya an example, the whole love film service is both available on wii and wii U but if it was only available on wii U people would see this as a wii U exclusive feature and be more inclined to buy one but 90% of the stuff on wii U is also available on the wii so the question is:

why upgrade?

I remember people were saying the same thing when the PSP was new, and many game journalists compared it to being a $300.00 black-coated paperweight. But after it got some more games for it's library it started to do better. I think the same thing will happen to the Wii U. Once more exclusive games are released for it, more people will buy it. I think one of the titles to watch out for will be Smash Bros Universe.

Agreed completely. I won't bother upgrading until the next Zelda title comes out. I don't have a lot of cash to spare so I need a really good reason to upgrade - especially since I only got my Wii 2 years ago.

exactly as more games show up its gonna gain more popularity and on the plus side it plays second hand games, something the 720 and ps4 apparently wont do, and if that will be the case ill be going with a steam box and a wiiU

To be honest most consoles don't do well on release. I'm sure the sales will pick up as more desirable games come out. A lot of people follow the games rather then the systems, so I'm sure that's all it needs.
I'm actually glad that nintendo tries to do something a little different...coz seriously, three of the same console would just seem pointless. Gimmick or not I'm glad, because I get to play in a different way to my other consoles that I own.

To me, the last good console Nintendo rolled out was the Super Nintendo. The N64's controls were rubbish, the Wii is a gimmick system that has no appeal to hardcore gamers, and to me, the Wii U is a small step in the right direction, but I can imagine people would be offset by that HUGE screen controller.

If Nintendo would just stop with the gimmicky shit, they wouldn't be getting their asses handed to them by Microsoft and Playstation in the long run of things.

It lacks games.. Im already bored of the ones i hav.. Ok i think wii u just wasnt ready wen they launched it. It feels premature on its release. And seems like nintendo just wanna release it as soon as possible, but its understandable cos they know ps4 and 720 is coming out soon n this console wont b able to compete
